Ferrari 250 GTO Breaks Record at $52M Monterey Sale
The legendary Ferrari 250 GTO continues to set the gold standard in collector car values. A matching-numbers 1962 example, chassis #3851GT, crossed the block at RM Sotheby's Monterey auction for an astonishing $52 million, inclusive of buyer's premium.
The car, finished in its original Rosso Corsa with a blue racing stripe, has an impeccable provenance stretching back to its delivery to its first owner in Italy. It competed in the Tour de France Automobile and several Italian hillclimb events during the 1960s.
Only 36 examples of the 250 GTO were built between 1962 and 1964, making it one of the rarest and most sought-after Ferraris ever produced. The model holds multiple records for the highest prices paid for a car at auction.
Market analysts note that 250 GTO values have appreciated approximately 8% annually over the past decade, far outpacing traditional investment vehicles.
